SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there a maximum number of students allowed to participate on a single team?
We have no maximum on the number of students allowed to participate. However, if an abstract is selected to present a full poster, the team will be limited to 10 minute on the presentation so that might dictate how many students actually present.

Is there a specific ratio required between undergraduate and postgraduate participants? No. This year, we have established separate categories for the contest. We plan to award cash prizes, separate prizes for undergraduate and graduate researcher (or team). If the team includes a graduate student researcher (not just as an adviser), it falls into the graduate category.

Are there any particular guidelines or formats that the poster must adhere to? Again, we have no strict guidelines but recommend the students select a format that is conducive to presenting the research results in 10 minutes or less.

CALL FOR STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECT PRESENTATIONS
North East Residuals & Biosolids Association

The North East Biosolids & Residuals Association’s (NEBRA) virtual Student Presentation Contest is open to graduate and undergraduate students in any field of study with research related to:

Contaminants of Emerging Concern (PFAS, Microplastics, pharmaceuticals, etc.) and their impacts on biosolids and residuals management programs
Advances in Anaerobic Digestion and other solids treatment processes

Resource recovery and value creation from wastewater solids
Sustainable and beneficial uses of biosolids/residual for agriculture, silviculture, etc.
Innovative technologies for the destruction and mitigation of CECs in contaminated biosolids/residuals

Our online format gives us the opportunity to reach out well beyond the Northeast and solicit participation nationally, even internationally. We are excited to welcome students from across the globe who are studying these important subjects.

Go to http://www.nebiosolids.org/2026-student-research-contest for more information about how to submit an abstract. Abstracts will be screened for relevance by NEBRA’s Research Committee and those selected will be notified by October 9th. Students selected to present will be required to pre-record and upload their presentation (5-10 minutes long) by 9:00 am on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The recordings will be played on October 20th from 1 to 3 pm EST and student(s) must be available at that time to answer questions from the Judges.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the students with the best research/project presentations. There will be separate prizes for best graduate and undergraduate presentations. Prize amounts will be determined based on the abstracts submitted.

The winners will be announced and recognized at the Northeast Residuals & Biosolids Conference in Portland, Maine, October 29 and 30th. The winner is welcome to join in person or virtually to be recognized. We plan to record and play the winning presentation for the conference attendees.
