LAWPCA Celebrates EMS! On September 23rd, the Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority celebrated a couple of years of hard work on the part of the management and staff putting in place a biosolids Environmental Management System (EMS).

On September 23rd, the Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority celebrated a couple of years of hard work on the part of the management and staff putting in place a biosolids Environmental Management System (EMS). Jim Cox of the National Biosolids Partnership (NBP) flew up from Washington, Ned Beecher of NEBRA drove over from New Hampshire, and Mark King of Maine DEP showed up to congratulate LAWPCA as the first public wastewater utility in New England to achieve this top honor. The NBP EMS program is built on the ISO 14001 EMS model, but goes above and beyond by requiring an independent third-party audit. This past spring, several days of auditing by KEMA Registered Quality (http://www.krqusa.com/national_bio-solids.html) led to NBP certification of the LAWPCA program on July 14th. “I’ll put this in perspective,” said Cox. “The crown jewel of this Partnership is the EMS program. There are about 1500 agencies in this country that generate significant quantities of biosolids. The NBP is working with about 100 of those. Within that 100, only 30 have achieved this standard. [LAWPCA’s certification] is a significant achievement – how unique this is. Lewiston-Auburn chose to go this difficult, voluntary, non-regulatory path to a much higher achievement.”
